Periodyk ma za zadanie prezentować badania i artykuły naukowe polskich i zagranicznych badaczy dotyczące szeroko pojętego antyku chrześcijańskiego, zwłaszcza pisma Ojców Kościoła (I-VIII wiek) i ich nauczanie, jak również epokę bizantyńską, a także recepcję myśli wczesnochrześcijańskiej w późniejszych wiekach oraz promować polskie studia nad antykiem chrześcijańskim. Dokumentuje również życie patrystyczne w Polsce i na świecie poprzez publikację recenzji nowych książek, corocznych bibliografii z zakresu literatury wczesnochrześcijańskiej oraz sprawozdań z konferencji i sympozjów patrystycznych. Zakres tematyczny czasopisma związany jest przedstawionym celem czasopisma i ma wymiar interdyscyplinarny z ukierunkowaniem na teologię, historię, literaturoznawstwo, historię sztuki, filozofię w kontekście wczesnego chrześcijaństwa i okresu bizantyjskiego.
